Installation
Installation stages:
- Local install: Docker image, packages or a source copy
- Cluster configuration:
postvec setup
postvec-server is the companion inference process for remote mode, GPU hosts and managed cloud databases. When to use it.
| Host | Path |
|---|---|
| Try it locally | Quick start local or quick start remote |
| Self-hosted PostgreSQL 16, 17 or 18 | Packages, then configure |
| Inference off the database (GPU, isolation, fleet) | postvec-server (Docker or packages), then connect PostgreSQL |
| RDS, Aurora, Cloud SQL, Azure Flexible Server, Supabase, Neon | Managed PostgreSQL |
| Development tree | From source |
| pgai or pg_vectorize pipeline | Coming from pgai |
Self-hosted needs pgvector >= 0.8, superuser and a host that can set shared_preload_libraries = 'postvec' and restart. If preload is still pending, SELECT postvec.start_worker() runs the worker until the next server restart.
